OK, I see now ... a partial conversion.... So how is it, you can run a chain in a gear motor, but not a gear in a chain motor ? ...
A gear drive requires three additional drilled & tapped holes. To put a chain in a gear drive block is easy: just ignore 2 holes & plug the 3rd. one. Going the other way isn't easy, as it requires the additional machining.
As for the "partial" conversion, if he didn't add the cam retainer, as used on factory blocks, there's nothing holding the cam in position: it can walk fore-aft, changing timing a bit, and the nose bolt can bump against the timing cover:
See the extra "hump" in the casting, just above the upper cam plate bolt hole? That was added to gear drive castings, to strengthen the upper hole (that hole would be right at the edge of a chain casting), and to cover the elongated retainer hole in the front engine plate.
ie, if you added all 3 holes to a chain block, the front engine plate would have a big oil leak on the backside! Unless you figured out some way to plug the hole (that's the "ingenuity" mentioned).
