The foundry code question arose from a discussion amoung a group of us "hot rodders' concerning the foundary codes on early hemi blocks (1951 thru 1958). These blocks have one of three codes, CWC, A1 or AI and HH. Conventional wisdom was the CWC code was for Chrysler Windsor Canada, A1 was for Chrysler somewhere in Detroit, and HH was for Hamtramck, MI.
I think we have established that CWC was Campbell, Wyant & Canon Foundry in Detroit not Chrysler Windsor. We have one person telling us that during the time period we were interested in the Windsor foundry made only the 6 cylinder "long block" and the Plymouth-Dodge 55 thru 59 V8 which was not a hemi. We need at least one other confirmation of this information.
The A1 or AI code we believe was for American Foundry in Indianapolis which began casting blocks and transmissions for Walter P. in 1925 and became a Chrysler subsidiary in 1948 and was closed by Diamler-Chrysler in 2005. We are looking for at least two people to confirm this assumption.
The HH code we are pretty sure was for the old Dodge Brothers foundry on Hamtramck Road in the Highland Park area. This mark appears only on Dodge V8 engines to our knowledge. We are looking for confirmation or refutation of this assumption.
We are attampting the make contact with CWC Castings, the successor to Campbell, Wyant & Canon, and a retired American Foundry worker to try to confirm some of this information. Any leads to anyone that may confirm or refute our assumptions would be appreciated.
