I also just finished an unpublished memoir of a friend's father's account of his going ashore on Kwajalein on the first day...and the year or so after of his time there. He was actually in the USAAF, but went ashore after the Marines later that afternoon scared to death. Once the island was secured, he ended up maintianing and operating the fuel tanks for the delivery of fuel to planes based on the island as well as the occasional crippled plane forced to land there. It's one of the best stories of day-to-day life of the typical GI who wasn't directly in combat.
